Lightning Learning: Acute Kidney Injury (AKI)
What?
Does your patient have AKI? Look for any of the following:
Rise in serum creatinine of ≥26 micromol/litre in 48 hours
≥50% or rise in serum creatinine within the past 7 days
Fall in urine output to <0.5 ml/kg/hr for more than…
6 hours in adults
>8 hours in children & young people.
Why?
AKI is seen in 13-18% of all hospital admissions and inpatient mortality is 25-30% in the UK alone – but it can be reversible!
Early identification and treatment of the cause is the key for avoiding permanent kidney damage.
According to NCEPOD only 50% of patients who died from AKI received good care.
