The Paediatric Foreign Body Game

The Paediatric Foreign Body Game

Paediatric foreign body insertion or ingestion of objects is common. Removing them, however, can be a tricky task as it depends on where it is and what it’s made of. As such, we have created a quick card game (or revision flashcards) that uncovers the most common foreign objects that are inserted or ingested by children. The aim of the game it to decide what you should do next…

How to play

  1. There are 10 cases to consider.
  2. For each case you will need to decide whether to:
    • Leave the foreign body in and reassure the family.
    • Take out the foreign body in the Children's ED.
    • Try to take out the foreign body. But if child does not tolerate, consider leaving it in.
    • Removal of the foreign body will require specialist involvement.
  3. As a group, discuss each case and decide what you would do according to your local guidance.
  4. (Optional) Score points for each valid answer and tally up at the end.

You can download a print-ready version of the cards by clicking on the button below. We recommend printing in colour, double-sided at either A5 or A6 (may require cutting to size).
